Question: I am pretty sure that by the NCAA rules, throwing the ball into or through the box counts as "getting it in." Is this the same in high school, or does the ball need to touch a player inside the box? Here's the scenario: in a high school game, the attacking team's count is running out and a player takes a shot from a yard outside the restraining box. The shot goes right through the middle of the box, misses the net, and would have been backed up by the offense, but the referee blows his whistle while the shot is going out of bounds, says the count expired, and awards the ball to the defense. Is that the right call?

I suppose I should start making some PCLL threads here, if only to spark some convo on our league in the Northeast portion of the MCLA.

So far:

On the D1 side of things: BC has taken 2 OOC trips. 3-0 vs SELC, 0-3 on their trip out west. All good teams to be had, BC looks like they're a top 10 team and in play to avenge their PCLL Championship loss to SUNY Buffalo. They don't play again until next week. Friday, BU kicks off their OOC season with a game down south with Va Tech. Northeastern went undefeated down south and now head out west, having also defeated Arizona. UConn looked excellent against DII New Haven tonight in a 24-3 final, and URI skinned by Stonehill 8-5, looks like the Skyhawks are back.

D2: Coast Guard is the only team of note here, sitting at 3-2 with blow out wins against Southern CT, and an Emory team that looks like they are no longer the same team, a close win against PBA, a close loss to Elon, and a 10 goal loss to GVSU. 4 games in 5 days is a rough gig but, Dumsa and Co. are still very good.

Rest of the week in the PCLL

Thursday, March 8th
Northeastern @ Grand Canyon 1pm MT

Friday, March 9th
Central Connecticut @ Southern Connecticut 4pm EST
Boston University @ Virginia Tech (At FSU) 8pm EST

Saturday, March 10th
Maine @ Briarcliffe 1pm EST
Stonehill @ Tennessee Wesleyan (At Elon) 2pm EST
SUNY Buffalo @ Clemson 7pm EST

Sunday, March 11th
Northeastern @ Arizona State 1pm MT
SUNY Buffalo @ Georgia Tech (At FSU) 2pm EST
Stonehill @ Elon 2pm EST

CAL hosts the Stanford Cardinal in the 2012 Lacrosse Big Game. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 and Stanford is looking to upset CAL before the WCLL playoffs. CAL leads the game most of the way, Stanford ties it late in the game and wins in double overtime.

The game had PAC-12 atmosphere with the CAL Band and Cheerleaders and it was senior night for CAL. Cal looked to be cruising to a victory at 8-6 midway through the fourth quarter, but Stanford came back to tie the game with two minutes remaining and then survived a barrage of CAL shots in the first overtime. It was a classic big game although the Stanford Band wasn’t out on the field at the end.

A five minute video report can be viewed Youtube at

Or Vimeo at

There have been a number of posts by a nunber of people suggesting some areas where perhaps the MCLA needs improvement to enhance the image of the league or for the MCLA to become more credible. Some of these deal with poorly kept and dubious stats, questions about the polls, AL selections, seeding, AA's and so on. I'll dodge those issues without offering an opinion with the exception of stat keeping which really seems inconsistent and questionable for some teams.

However, as the All Conference teams are being announced, I'm really surprsied at how different the various conferences seem to go about their selections and the fact that many times they seem to be contrary to MCLA guidelines. According to the Operational Policy posted on the website, conferences "will award" 1st and 2nd teams of 3 Attack, 3 mids, 3 dpoles and 1 goalie. In addition, 1 FOGO, 1 LSM and 1 Defensive Specialist. They are then allowed to have a similar setup for a 3rd team if they choose. Any other nominations receive HM. Finally, an OPOY, DPOY, and COY.

To date only a few conferences have their All Conf posted on the website. The PNCLL seems to have it according to the Ops Policy except they have no OPOY but have added an MVP and Freshman of the year. SELC is similar, no 3rd team but a bunch of HM's along with a Rookie of the Year and a "Specialty Player of the Year."

SLC is really wierd. No 1st team LSM, only 1 Dpole but have 4 mids and 6 at Attack. 2nd team also odd, 4 at Attack, 2 mids, 2 dpoles but 3 LSM's.

Nothing "officially" posted on the CCLA but one contributor posted an AC team with a 1st team with 4 Attack, Mids, and Dpoles along with 2 Goalies. No goalie on the second team. Not sure if this reprot for the CLLA is accurate.

Just wondering if conferences were given other instructions or allowances not updated in the Ops Policy.

What's the point of having written guidelines, policies and instructions if conferences can do whatever they want regarding numbers and create awards not mentioned by the MCLA. Seems this inconsistancy between conferences and disregarding league instructions is amateurish and diminshes the MCLA's reputation.

So unless there is information out there I haven't seen or read which allows for variances, which is possible, the various contradictory conference awards just seems to send the wrong message about the MCLA.

Any thoughts?

The Central Michigan Men's Lacrosse Team is looking for a new coaching staff for the 2012-2013 season and on.

The CMU Men's team has been playing for the past decade in the highly competitive CCLA conference of the MCLA. We are a young team with a lot of talent and skill that is hoping to elevate our game in the immediate future. We are making changes to the program and operating at a higher level than we ever have, implementing a strength & conditioning program and practicing more times per week. Our previous coaching staff and the current team are going in different directions and we are looking for a new coaching staff to step in and lead us hopefully to a conference championship.

Positions that need filling:

1 Head Coach (Experience is a must. Preferably multiple years coaching at the high school/college level or at the very least playing at the NCAA/MCLA level.)

1 Defensive Coordinator (Playing experience [preferably at the college level NCAA/MCLA] is all that is required. Defensive focus.)

1 Offensive Coordinator (Playing experience [preferably at the college level NCAA/MCLA] is all that is again required. Offensive focus)

Coaching Duties:
-Practice 3-4 times a week
-Team meetings
-League meetings

Financial details and things of that nature will be discussed later.

You can contact the team President at:

Evan Davis
davis3de@cmich.edu

My predictions and some explanation

Attack
Austin English -US Coast Guard- No brainer here, leads league in assists and points. We locked him off in our game and prevented him from scoring but resulted in 7 assists against us. Not quite the player Matt Chase was last year but still very good.

Matt Karp -Briarcliffe- Leads the league in goals. Not quite the year he had last year as an All American but still lighting up the scoreboard. I would have Trauma here but he has only played 4 games this season.

Anthony Powers -Stonehill- Leading a very good Stonehill attack line. Having Connor Green at Mid helps but the kid scores. I debated putting the freshman Devin Green here but, Powers gets it.

Midfield

Nicholas Zablotny -US Coast Guard- Again, Coast Guard boasts one of the best players in the PCLL. The Maryland native is having a career year and has done an excellent job filling in the shoes of Kyle Ennis.

Connor Green -Stonehill- Continues to put up big numbers when it counts. Had 5 goals against Elon, 4 points against USCG, and 6 points against Briarcliffe. Also had 6 goals against Maine, who's goalie is very good.

Peter Tiemann -Southern Connecticut- Pete joined us mid season after quitting the football team and played his first 4 games at D. He is a shut down defender. However due to issues with numbers, we moved him to midfield and he is a match up nightmare, getting hat tricks in 2 of 3 games at midfield, including 3 last night at Stonehill. Think if Antonio Gates played lacrosse. I would suggest Spenser Parnell here, transfer from Syracuse, but he has only played in 3 MCLA contests.

Defense

Defense is pretty tough to gauge here. We don't play BC until Saturday, and it wouldn't be fair to make an analysis without including the BC defenders here. I will advocate for one of my guys though.

Bryan Nagel -Southern Connecticut- Bryan is truly a shut down corner. Fast, excellent checks, plays good sound defense. Helluva motor and does not stop working.

Goalie

None of the PCLL goalies really stand out for me. Granted we played Stonehill with 11 guys and did not really test Phillips too much, but the Maine goalie is pretty good. (Not sure he is as good as the stats say on the website.) Collica and Flaherty have each come back to earth after last season. SCSU's starter Christian Werwaiss has been playing attack the last 3 games so he has not been able to show what he can do.
